I got this Taylor 3842 Digital Food Scale to replace an

EatSmart Precision Pro Digital Kitchen Scale, Silver

I got back in 2012. The Taylor scale looks good enough to sit on my countertop full time. It features a large LCD readout and an impressive 11 lb. capacity in 0.1oz./1g increments.I use this scale primarily for break-making. This scale is essential for weighing ingredients and portioning dough for consistent results. I have not noticed a delay in adding weight and seeing the display update.I really love the tare feature - the ability to zero out the weight of bowls/plates. Because the unit has the tare capability there should be little need to contaminate the glass surface with items...just use a small plate and tare it and put your items in the plate. Then you can dishwash the plate and keep the glass clean.Oddly, I am not a huge fan of the auto-off feature. Sometimes I like the unit to stay on while I am doing things so I don't have to copy or memorize the display before it turns off. Then again, this does save battery life.I also use this scale for weighing smaller packages prior to shipping or purchasing postage. I could see this being useful for other applications too, such as dieting.Overall, I like the Taylor scale and find it to be an indispensable tool in the kitchen.

For this review, I am comparing the Taylor against 2 other digital scales I've owned for a long time:

Epica Accupro Digital Kitchen Scale

 and

Escali P115CH Primo Digital Kitchen Food Scale

Many of the features are standard in scales these days. Light and portable: made of plastic, it's light and easy to take with you, should you need to travel with it. Long battery life: digital scales don't use a lot of energy, and I don't remember when I last replaced the batteries on any of my scales. Auto-off: most scales turn off on their own after a period.Construction wise, the Taylor looks a bit bulky and hollow. I do like the elevated glass platform though. It allows for easy visibility when weighing larger objects, and the readout is given in convenient pounds and ounces format: e.g. 1 lbs 10.2 oz. This makes for a great postage scale because you don't have to do any conversion before using the USPS postage calculator online. On my Epica, the readout is in decimals: 1.34 lbs. Or I could change it to ounces: 21.44 oz. That may be fine when cooking, but not fine when using the USPS website where you have to enter it in as ___ lbs ____ oz, so i have to google ".34 lb to oz" which returns 5.44 oz (alternatively, I could've subtracted 21.44 - 16 = 5.44.I prefer the big buttons and super-size display on my Epica. I've gotten so used to it. The Taylor LCD is much smaller by comparison. The Epica offers 1/100th resolution on ounces: eg. 14.35 oz. The Taylor would only read 14.3 oz. This level of resolution may or may not be important to you.

Some devices may not be able to view the attached video. This kitchen scale is a basic unit. It's very light weight and arrives with 2 AAA batteries. The buttons are clearly labeled and the display screen is of adequate size to view the measurement readings. The unit can measure up to 11 lbs. (for those home canning enthusiasts who need to measure larger quantities). Please note however that the 11 lbs. includes any containers used to hold your product. The instruction booklet is well written with easy to understand directions. You can easily offset the weight of any container to only weigh the ingredients being measured - simply place your bowl centered on the glass base and push the Tare button and the unit will reset the scale to "0."Regarding accuracy, I merely compared this scale to my current digital kitchen scale. Between the two units, the varying weight difference between weighed items was at most, only .02 - an acceptable deviance for my basic kitchen measurements.Overall - A good basic unit. It's very lightweight (lighter than my original scale - Ozeri 11 lb. scale) and I don't believe it will be able to withstand abuse or being dropped. I'd encourage buyers to store it back in the original box when not in use to preserve its lifespan.

I receive more kitchen scales to review than any other item (except maybe dog food), although I can't complain because I do most of my cooking measurements by weight instead of volume. I have 8 digital kitchen scales in my home right now, and the Taylor 3842 probably ranks in the top 20%. The main features I look for are ease of use and accuracy. By ease of use, I refer to the weight surface. The Taylor has a glass plate built onto the top for adding food. Ideally, I like a kitchen scale with a flat surface without an added plate so I can put more food on it, but the 3842 surface works fairly well. It is large enough to hold pretty much anything you would want to measure. If you do a lot of baking, you may want to consider a kitchen scale that has a built in bowl instead of a plate, so you can measure things like flour and sugar. Otherwise, I find this surface works well. I tested it out against 4 other scales I own and although there was some variances between them, the 3842 seemed extremely accurate when I used my gram weights on it. But I have several quick read thermometers from Taylor that are also very accurate so I have come to expect this from this company.

This is a small to medium size scale that works well and has an easy to readLCD readout. My only issue is that the readout does not hold for a few seconds after the item being weighed is removed. There are a number of positive things about this scale. It does not take up a lot of space but will hold a dinner size plate. It is accurate. It is easy to read. It is easy to clean by hand. It has a tare feature. It has an auto shut off. Finally it uses only two AAA batteries. My only issue with the scale is that the readout does not hold for five seconds or so after the item weighed is removed. This is fine if you can see the readout. Sometimes I will put items on a dinner size plate and weigh them making it hard to see the readout. One I remove the plate the readout goes back to zero. If the readout stayed steady for five seconds it would be much easier to weigh items on larger plates.Overall this is a nice scale. If you use smaller plates or just weigh items on the scale it is really good.

I've been using this Taylor digital food scale for about a month now. It says food scale, but I mainly use it for non-food weighing - mail, random kids science projects, etc. And of course my kids use it to weigh all kinds of random stuff (eg, how much does this dead bug weigh, how much does my gum weight, etc etc). Weight goes all the way down to 1 gram and up to 11 pounds which pretty much covers 95% of my needs.I find this scale easy to use and operate (not unnecessarily difficult to use). I like that it takes standard size batteries (AAA) since I usually have those around. I like the large glass top which makes it easier to way larger randomly shaped items. I like the contemporary design. On the cons side it is a bit bulkier than it probably needs to be and build quality feels a bit on the hollow/cheaper side (we'll see how it holds up over time - will update my review if anything changes).Overall at $20 a solid performer - 4-stars from me in consideration of price/value.

I can't say anything negative about how the scale functions... I've tested it a few times (weighing small weights or other items I'm sure of the weight on) and it's spot on every time. The display is large and easy to read, tare works perfectly. My issues would be with the two parts of it: the base, and the glass top. The base looks/feels cheap to me. It doesn't look like metal, it looks and feels like silver plastic, that is countered with the crazy heavy glass top. I like the idea of the glass tip (easy to clean/sanitize, good size, etc) however it just feels top heavy and I'm beyond worried that I'm going to drop it and break it. I wish it was instead made from a strong but lightweight bpa free plastic/plexiglass.As long as you have a dedicated space for it (and aren't jamming it in a cabinet and risking it falling like I am) it's a great choice and when it comes down to it, it weighs things perfectly which is all that matters.

This is an attractive and reliable kitchen scale. I love the thick glass plate and easy to read display. It measures either grams or pounds/ounces, and automatically resets the tare each time it is turned on (or the tare button is pressed). It takes 2 AAA batteries (included) and weighs up to 11 lbs in 0.1 ounce or 1g increments.I like it better than my

Ozeri ZK011 Scale

for several reasons. First, it takes 2 AAA batteries instead of a button battery. It is slightly larger overall (although it weighs slightly less). But more importantly, it remembers whether I've been using grams or pounds/ounces as the units. They both seem equally reliable and are very consistent in measurements with each other. The only improvement I'd like to see is the ability to store or remember a tare. I use this to measure milk from our goat (among other things), and I have to subtract the weight of the pail myself. While you can put an empty bucket on it, set the tare, and then fill the bucket and re-weigh, there isn't time to milk a goat before it turns off and resets! Also when my daughter used this making her own makeup and creams, she found it could be off by a little over 1g or so, so it wasn't accurate enough to measure, say, a couple of grams. But I guess that's to be expected when it only measures to the gram level. But overall, this is a very nice multi-purpose scale, useful for everything from weighing mail and small packages to kitchen items (or goat milk)!

The Taylor digital food scale is a useful addition to any kitchen setup. The 11lb capacity is overkill for basic household tasks, but is great for larger items (huge cuts of meat, for instance!) and other tasks (like weighing mail, which - in a pinch - is another use I've found for it).The removable glass dish is easily cleaned and dishwasher safe.It relies on 2 AAA batteries, included in the package, and so far -- after a dedicated six weeks of use -- they're still working beautifully. The small mass and weight increments are excellent, and the scale has been accurate thus far (tested with a couple small weights to ensure measurements were on-point).I would definitely recommend the Taylor food scale for purchase to anyone looking for a reliable, durable, and accurate scale in their kitchen. I use it daily, and have been thrilled with its performance.

I didn't really bother with kitchen scales until I got into tea in a very serious way many years back. It rapidly became apparent to me that if I wanted consistent results from the very expensive leaves I was acquiring, a scale was the only way to go. Since then, the wisdom of weighing has become more and more apparent to me although I've sort of adopted a hybrid system--some things weighed, others not. Regardless, a scale really should be standard in the kitchen repertoire of everyone who wants to cook well.I own several kitchen scales and was happy for the opportunity to test drive the Taylor 3842, despite having a very low opinion of their glass candy thermometers (which I reviewed here on Amazon for those interested enough to dig). Fortunately, this scale performs much more admirably. The Taylor 3842 is a nice-looking scale, at least on paper (if you will). Up close and personal, it's kinda cheesy. Rather than pretend to look like metal, the base is plastic, and very lightweight plastic at that. The glass plate is pretty but can't be removed. Capacity is 5 kg/11+ lbs., the minimum unit increments are 0.1 oz. and 1 g; this is fine for kitchen use as the likelihood of having to measure anything smaller than a gram is pretty remote. Features are pretty standard and include tare function (essential) and a digital readout that, unfortunately, brings the '90s to mind. There's an auto-shutoff feature and batteries are included. I personally prefer the AA's that my favorite scales use (and which last me forever--how long does it need to be engaged?), but at least Taylor stepped up to the plate and included them and they don't cost much to replace.I tend to prefer a scale with more heft than the Taylor 3842 provides; I suspect that this isn't going to hold up to much abuse (of course, one should be careful with any scale but accidents happen). Weights seem accurate and if this is of concern, be aware that there's no apparent way to calibrate the scale. All things considered, though, one shouldn't need to.As mentioned, I have (three) other kitchen scales, all of which I prefer to the Taylor 3842 (one by not much) and have reviewed on Amazon. However, they all list for substantially more than this one so if price is a matter of concern, the Taylor 3842 will probably fit your needs nicely. If you want to spend more, there are sturdier scales but at this price point, I don't think the Taylor 3842 will disappoint as long as you know what to expect.

Before receiving this scale, I'd been using the

Escali P115C

for weighing food items, mail needing postage, and even aquarium additives, and loving it. This scale enjoys all the same benefits of the Escali -- 11 lb capacity in .1 lb or 1 g increments, easy tare button, auto-off feature. This scale has an easy-to-clean glass surface, however, instead of the textured plastic of the Escali, which makes placing food items directly on the scale a feasible approach, and spilling something on the scale less problematic (the metal pillar which supports the glass plate is recessed far enough from the sides of the glass, that the odds of getting any liquid or food inside the scale is much lower than with the Escali).Pro-tip: if you need to weigh something that obscures the screen, you can press the tare button once the item has stabilized, remove the item, and see the weight expressed as a negative number (good for larger packages that need postage).

When I was learning to cook nobody here in the US bothered with any such thing as a scale. Off I went to live in Germany for several years, where my landlady taught me to cook and bake many of her traditional dishes and pastries. I brought home dozens of recipes and then proceeded to pull my hair out for the next several decades trying to convert them to US measurements. In the mid-70's the entire known world moved to the metric system. Well, except for us. It just might be too difficult for the old folks. Long after Pyrex added metric measurements to one side of the measuring cup and I went off to university and became a chemist (chemists do everything in metrics!) I still kept on trying to convert those treasured recipes to the US measuring system, a process even Julia Child found infinitely frustrating. Maybe it was simply the cost of a digital scale, who knows . .And then one day a few years back the scales fell from my eyes and I realized (FINALLY!) that there was no need whatever to fuss around trying to change the recipes. All I had to do was get myself a digital scale and measure in metrics, which is, after all, not one whit more difficult than measuring in cups. And so I have become the Queen of Digital Scales and always have at least one waiting review.Down the side of the box that this

Taylor 3842 Digital Food Scale

comes in is a list of features -▶︎ Glass Top▶︎ Easy to Read LDC Display▶︎ Tare Feature▶︎ Auto Off▶︎ Large Capacity - 11 pound capacity in 0.1 oz measurements▶︎ Batteries IncludedAll of that is true . . . this does have a glass top (rather thin), but it stands up a full thumb's-width above the base. I'm not always the neatest cook in the world so I can see myself now trying to get butter out of that empty space. The scale does have a fairly large LCD display, but it is black on gray. My older eyes don't find that color combo easy to read. Most older eyes don't. Backlit displays are much easier.Every single digital scale that I have ever examined has a tare feature and auto off. Most intended for use in the kitchen have an 11 pound capacity. The batteries are always included - and in every other case those batteries are pre-installed, long lasting lithium watch batteries, not the AAA batteries this one uses.Last, hardly least, I like a scale that looks good on the counter, something I cannot say of the

Taylor 3842 Digital Food Scale

, which features a plastic base colored to resemble brushed aluminum. I say resemble because there is no way you could mistake it for the real thing. Frankly, this looks like the kind of "kitchen equipment" you find in a fairly realistic little girl's playhouse, not a working kitchen.Grandma's $0.02 - Nothing special and nowhere close to the top of my list. You can do better for the price.

I always use a kitchen scale - measuring ingredients by weight is a lot more precise than by volume, so whether it be for baking or calorie counting or whatever, I find it really handy to have one nearby. This one works very well - weights up to 11 lbs of whatever in either lbs and oz or grams. Display sticks out so that if you put something large on it (big baking bowl) you can probably still see it. Nice contrast and easy to read. Two buttons: one is units (only two options: grams or lb and oz) the other is an on/off/tare. Buttons do have crevices around there, so watch it...it can hold food residues if you spill. Same with the bezel around the display.Tare is consistent - easy to weigh by putting your container on first, taring it out and looking at the difference to tell the weight of what is in the container. (Oppositely you can weigh container +food, tare it, dump food out , put empty container back on, and note the negative difference as the food weight)Nice glass top is flat and easy to clean. One the whole, I think this is a good scale...BUT I prefer the one I have by Ozeri better (

Ozeri Pronto Digital Multifunction Kitchen and Food Scale, Elegant Black

) because it does not have as many exposed crevices and has more unit options ((1) oz, (2) lb and oz, (3) grams, (4) kg), but that's minor...this one has a nicer glass top, so I suppose it's up to preference which is better. Both seem to weigh about the same.

I've used a few digital food scales, and this really isn't any different. I do appreciate that it's lightweight so I can take it in and out of the drawer easily. The flat surface is ideal for me so I can easily place bowls or cups containing various items on top....the scales with bowls on top are too inconvenient for measuring and storing in drawers. This measures grams, ounces, and pounds (max is 11 pounds). It has an auto shut-off feature and a tare function (i.e. you can zero out the weight of a bowl and then measure the actual contents). This is a good scale, but it's no different than all of them out on the market these days. The glass top does make it easier to clean though.

Amazon sells a lot of food scales, and many have over 500 reviews over a few years. Here is another food scale that doesn't really offer much new, but it does the job well like many of the others. The numbers are clear, the features are standard, and price is reasonable. Compared to my other kitchen scales, this one does have a glass plate to weigh on which the manufacture claims to reduce flavor carry over.My advice is to stick with a scale in Amazon's top 20 as well as one with a lot of reviews over at least a year. That way you know if it lasts. But if you are a fan of Taylor and/or this scale cracks the top 20, then go for it.
